On 29 September 2016 the environmental license of the Paks II project was released by the environmental authority, the Government Office of Baranya County. Energiaklub together with Greenpeace Hungary will appeal against the decision.

In November 2015 the European Commission opened an in-depth state aid investigation into Hungary's plans to provide financing for the construction of two new nuclear reactors in Paks. This gave interested third parties an opportunity to comment on the measure. Energiaklub has submitted its comments.

The key question of our analysis is whether the Paks-2 nuclear power plant company will be capable of independent operation in the economic sense, or its survival will depend on further additional aid by the owner, the central budget, even after its commissioning. We examine from a corporate perspective in what way the already disclosed financing terms and conditions affect the everyday operation of the power plant company.

On 19 March Energiaklub together with The Greens/European Free Alliance organized a public hearing in the European Parliament in Brussels on the questions around the planned Hungarian nuclear plant, Paks II. Given the recent developments in the Paks-case, the hearing – jointly hosted by Rebecca Harms and Benedek Jávor – was given a special emphasis.

There is no need for Paks II, as Hungary could supply its future energy needs without a new nuclear power plant. This was revealed by a study, prepared by Energiaklub, which proposes a much more favorable solution instead of this single, unnecessary 12 billion Euro investment. All this can be achieved by rationalizing energy consumption, carrying out developments on the field of energy efficiency, reaching a high share of renewables and establishing a flexible, decentralized energy system.

In the last two months Energiaklub organized 4 public roundtable events for citizens and the media under the name of „Seriously about Paks”. The main theme was the new Paks2 nuclear power plant investment. The purpose of these events was to discuss such issues, that are in the interest of the public, and which can influence opinion of the decision makers and the general public. These issues are environmental, political, geopolitical and economic questions related to the planned investment.
